Have you noticed that music plays some sort of role in everyone's lives? Whether it is what your life is centered around or if its just the background to your life, there is music in it somewhere. Music can take you back to a place with special memories or can be what you remember from a particular time and place. I often find myself relating songs to a particular event or time of my life. For some, music is what drives them, what inspires them, or what defines them. For others, music is a side-bar. And I think that, for many, music is an escape. A way to relax and think of other things or nothing at all. It may also be how we remember certain people that are no longer with us.
We all have varying tastes of music and what we want to hear or listen to but the one constant in that is that it IS music. I don't know that I have ever encountered someone who had no music in their lives. I can't imagine a life like that. There is music everywhere. Even if you only listen to talk radio, there is music in the commercials. During sporting events, there is music played before, after or between plays.
If you are one of those who says, "I don't listen to music", pay attention for a day and listen. Listen to all the things around you and see how much music you are exposed to that you never even realized.
As I started trying to think of something to blog about, I happened to be in the car and a song came on the radio that took me back to another time and place. A place that I can picture so vividly when I hear that song. And it occurred to me that I don't consider myself a music buff but I listen to the radio and I enjoy it. It isn't something that I would have considered a big part of my life. Then I started to pay attention. And I realized that there was very little of my day that didn't have music playing in the background. When you really pay attention and you realize all the ways that music impacts our lives, its amazing. And its wonderful, too.
Of course I would agree that music is a big part of my life. It's such great advice to say "pay attention!" it's all around us! I was walking today and while there was no actual music playing, I could hear music in the sound of the wind in the trees and the birds. Once you start paying attention...it's hard to tune it out.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Karey. I too don't consider myself a music buff but there is no doubt that throughout the week a song will pop up on the radio and it immediately takes me back to an exact point of time in my life or brings back in memory who was in my life at that time that I've lost touch with. As I get older my taste in "todays" music I can't grasp but I do see the passion that todays youth have in it. I find it great that each generation has a different style of music that they enjoyed at that time and now our youth has so many different options to listen to. For me 80's music and Christian music are my music of choice, though I have found myself listening to more talk radio of late.
